Message from the President

ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee (ICTC)

Welcome to the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Committee. We are a specialist International Scientific Committee of ICOMOS - the International Council on Monuments and Sites. ICOMOS works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. Our Committee promotes the sustainable development and responsible management of cultural tourism at places of cultural heritage significance – historic towns, cultural landscapes, archaeological sites and cultural routes - including World Heritage Sites.

ICOMOS ICTC plays an important role in providing strategic advice on policy formulation at international and national levels retaining excellent working relationships with important stakeholders such as UNESCO World Heritage Centre and UNWTO.

A global network, ICTC activities include research & publications, seminars sharing approaches to strategic planning and management, and workshops on conservation and tourism development at cultural heritage destinations worldwide. Publications with UNWTO: Congestion Management 2004; and Communicating Heritage 2011.

ICTC identifies tourism as a vital component in cultural heritage conservation. The concept of a dynamic interface and symbiotic relationship between heritage and tourism in both theory and practice, underpinned by the ICOMOS ICTC International Cultural Tourism Charter, is central to our Committee’s agenda.

Our vision is exciting: it is ‘work in progress’ and can only be developed further and realised through an active membership of heritage and cultural tourism professionals and academics sharing ideas and experience.

Interested? Join our Committee. Become a member of ICOMOS ICTC.
